BALTIMORE, Md. - Field hockey opened its season today at Sweet Briar College. NDMU got out front early and never looked back as the Gators defeated the Vixens, 5-0.
Sophomore Peace Ani sent one into the back of the net just 46 seconds into the game. Peace was able to control sophomore Megan Morales' shot that deflected off a defender to put the Gators up early.
Three minutes later, freshman Jessica Wells netted her first collegiate goal, as Morales' pass found the rookie to give the Gators a two goal lead.
The Notre Dame offense didn't let up, as it continued to shower the Vixen defense with an array of shots. At the 6:30 mark in the first half, senior Erika Deppenschmidt found Morales for her first goal on the year.
Morales netted her second goal of the game to start the second half, as the club extended its lead to 4-0. 11 minutes later, Morales was able to complete the hat-trick, following a Sweet Briar foul.
The Gators held the Vixen scoreless the rest of the way to claim the victory.
Morales led the Gators on offense with three goals and one helper, to go along with 12 shots on goal, while senior De'Ja Martin picked up the win in net.
Notre Dame is back in action Wednesday,as the team travels to Hood College for a 4 p.m. matchup.
