Martin Leads Gators To 15-10 Win Over Keystone

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior goalkeeper De'Ja Martin made a career high 21 saves, including stops on nine free position shots, to lead Notre Dame Maryland (1-3) to a 15-10 victory over Keystone (2-3) in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Alumnae Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators played a dominant first half en route to the victory. After junior Emily Hawkins converted a free position shot to give the Giants a 1-0 lead after just 1:13 of action, the Gators went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 advantage with a little more than 21 minutes remaining in the first half.

Junior Kaitlyn Walter started the run when she scored an unassisted goal with 27:03 to play in the half. Moments later, sophomore Kirstin McGee gave the Gators a lead they would never relinquish when she tallied an unassisted goal.

Senior Brittany Smith scored off a pass from McGee to increase the lead to 3-1 before freshman Summer Corey made it a 4-1 game when she scored on a free position shot. Sophomore Megan Morales increased the lead to 5-1 when registered an unassisted goal.

After Keystone came back to score back-to-back goals by Hannah Zuchowski and Savanna Robinson and cut the deficit to 5-3, the Gators responded by scoring four straight goals to assume a 9-3 advantage.

Senior Khamaree Owens scored an unassisted goal with 14:54 left in the half for a 6-3 Gators lead. Just 29 seconds later, McGee's second goal of the contest upped the Gators' advantage to 7-3. Walter's second goal of the game gave the Gators an 8-3 lead before an unassisted goal by Corey put Notre Dame ahead, 9-3.

On their way to a 9-3 lead, the Gators won 12 consecutive draw controls and converted nine of their first 14 shots.

With 10:01 remaining in the half, junior Nina Hodanich scored for the Giants, making it a 9-4 deficit. Just 16 second later, Morales won the draw control and scored to increase the Gators' lead to 10-4. With 2:45 left in the first half, Morales scored her third goal of the game off a pass from Walter to put the Gators ahead, 11-4.

With only 23 seconds left in the first half, Hodanich's unassisted goal pulled the Giants to within 11-5.

In the first half, the Giants outshot the Gators by a 21-19 margin but Martin held Keystone at bay, making 12 saves. In addition, Notre Dame won 16 of 17 draw controls.

Keystone opened the second half by turning up the defensive pressure. An unassisted goal by Kayla Bain pulled Keystone within 11-6 before McGee's unassisted goal restored Notre Dame's six-goal lead.

But, a goal by April Llewellyn off a pass from Hodanich and a free position goal by Alex Smith enabled Keystone to come within 12-8 with 18:25 remaining in regulation.

The Giants' defense, which forced 15 second half turnovers by Notre Dame, kept giving its offense a number of opportunities but Martin was solid in goal as she kept the Gators ahead.

With 13:57 remaining in regulation, Corey ended a 12-minute scoring drought by Notre Dame as she scored an unassisted goal to put the Gators up, 13-8. Just 39 seconds later, Walter tallied her third goal of the game to increase the advantage to 14-8.

A free position goal by Hawkins cut the Gators' lead to 14-10 with 9:28 remaining.

But, the Gators were patient on offense the rest of the way, holding Keystone off the scoreboard for the last 9:28.

With 5:10 left in regulation, Walter scored her fourth goal of the game to put the finishing touches on a 15-10 win.

Hawkins led the Giants with three goals while Hodanich had two goals and a pair of assists. Eight different Keystone players scored in the game as the Giants scored four free-position goals.

Goalkeeper Daphne Leenas, who entered the game as the top goalkeeper in the CSAC, made 14 saves in the loss.

Walter led the Gators with four goals and she now leads the team with 17 goals. Corey also added three goals while McGee had three goals and one assist.

Morales also added three goals but she made her biggest impact on the game on draw controls. She won 13 draw controls as she led Notre Dame to 25-2 advantage. McGee and Smith had four draw controls each.

In addition to making a career high 21 saves, Martin led the Gators with seven ground balls.

Keystone outshot the Gators by a 36-34 margin.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday, March 28 when they host Neumann University at 4:00 p.m.
