Senior Spotlight: Jessica Wells

Baltimore, Md. – The next Senior Spotlight is another dual sport athlete from Severn, Maryland. Jessica Wells is a Nursing Major playing field hockey and lacrosse her entire four years at Notre Dame of Maryland University. As a Captain for both programs, Wells has led her team on the field as well as in the Gator community.

Wells has been a member of the field hockey program since entering NDMU as a freshman in 2016. As a sophomore, she was selected to travel to Barbados to play field hockey with other college players representing the USA. Additionally, as a sophomore Wells was the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Scholar of Distinction in 2017. As captain of the field hockey team, she led her team to a season with more conference wins in program history since joining the Colonial States Athletic Conference in 2007. Wells has also been a member of the lacrosse team since her freshman year and as a junior was a crucial participant in earning a CSAC Championship, the first in program history. For the Spring of 2020, she earned her role as captain and was most looking forward to earning another championship. Throughout her four years at Notre Dame, Wells was on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee being a Lacrosse Representative.

Academically, Wells is also a standout in the classroom having a GPA of 3.85. This diligent work ethic is seen by being on the Dean's List every single semester, while also playing two sports. Every single year, participating in her respective sports, she earned recognition for the NFHCA National Academic Squad. She was also counted as one of the student-athletes on the CSAC All-Academic Team 2016-2019. As a Nursing major, she was involved in many honor societies on campus including being a member of Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for Nursing, Kappa Gamma Pi, and National Catholic Graduate Honor Society. Furthermore, Wells is currently the Co-Vice President of the Student Association of Notre Dame since 2019. This past year, Wells was a Care Coach for Nursing, which helps individuals adopt healthy lifestyles.

Upon Graduation from NDMU, Wells plans to pursue a career in Pediatric Nursing, become a Certified Pediatric Nurse, and eventually become a Nurse Practitioner.

Senior Interview

What is the best part about being a student-athlete?

The best part about being a student athlete is that you immediately develop a family with your teammates. You know that if you every need anything that there will be someone there for you and that you can always reach out to your coach if you need help.

What is one lesson or take away you will have from being a student-athlete at Notre Dame?

One lesson that I can take away from being a student athlete is that your teammates and coaches will become more like family and will be there for you for the rest of your life.

What is your favorite memory with your team?

I have favorite memories with both of my teams. The one on top is the 2019 Lacrosse playoff. We worked as a team to come back and win the semi-final game in overtime. We then went on to win the Championship. Everyone on the team had given everything that they had throughout the season and I will never forget the moment that the clock hit 0 and we knew we accomplished what some thought we could not. My favorite memory with field hockey is when we were playing Eastern Mennonite and we worked as a team to come back and win in overtime. I will never forget this moment because it was the first time that we had beat this team.

How has your life changed since attending NDMU?

Since attending NDMU, my life has changed so much. I have made so many lifelong friends and have had the opportunity to make so many memories.

Why did you choose to become a Gator?

I choose NDMU because of the small environment that allowed me to pursue my goal of becoming a nurse, while also being able to play field hockey and lacrosse at a competitive level.

What is your favorite memory at NDMU?

One of my favorite memories at Notre Dame is the team dinners that we would have with our teams. These gave us an opportunity to bond as a team and get to know each other better.
