BALTIMORE –
Rosemary O'Brien led the offense with 12 kills, while
Jade Stewart added nine kills, 19 digs and four aces for Notre Dame of Maryland University during a 3-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon.
O'Brien also had 12 kills in the opener of NDMU's weekend tri-match, as the Gators dropped a tight five-set contest to visiting Washington College.
Paulina Hernandez registered a career-high 35 digs defensively in NDMU's first five-set match of the season.
The Gators continue a string of six-straight matches at MBK Sports Complex on Tuesday, hosting Washington Adventist at 7 p.m.
NDMU 3, Gwynedd Mercy 0 (25-14, 25-23, 27-25)
The Gators, aided by three aces from
Gabbi Taganas and two by Hernandez, raced out to a 16-5 lead in the opening set. They scored the final four points to finish off the frame, capped by an O'Brien kill, an ace from
Emma Mueller and a kill by Taganas.
The Griffins were the team to start strong in the second, grabbing an early 10-3 advantage. They maintained a 22-18 lead late in the frame, but NDMU scored the next five points, including four on Mueller's serve, to get back in the set. With the score tied at 23-23, an O'Brien kill and a Gwynedd Mercy attack error helped the Gators double their set advantage.
Stewart had four aces on the service line during an 8-0 run midway through the third set to give NDMU an 18-10 edge. The Griffins rallied to tie things up at 23-23, and saved set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but a Mueller kill and an attack error ultimately clinched the match for the home side.
Mueller totaled 21 assists, five digs and four kills in the victory.
Ciarra Bockstie added seven kills and three blocks, while Hernandez supplied 18 digs and
Natalie Newton managed a double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs.
Washington College 3, NDMU 2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 15-25, 15-12)
O'Brien led the offense in both matches on Saturday, as she also had 12 kills in NDMU's five-set contest against the Shorewomen (6-3). Bockstie, Stewart and Taganas followed with six kills each, with Taganas adding a team-high five blocks and Stewart registering 15 digs.
Hernandez's 35 digs were nine above her previous high of 26 set during a four-set win over Christendom. She leads the CSAC with 5.80 digs per set overall on the year.
Mueller finished with 21 assists, 10 digs, five kills and three aces. Newton added 14 assists and 10 digs.
Angelina Schaber led all attackers with 20 kills for the visitors, including the match-clincher in the final set.
