BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame (MD) women's basketball team made history as
Daija Fitchett joined the 1,000-point club in the Gators 87-42 win over Cedar Crest College on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in the MBK Sports Complex. NDMU is now 9-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.
Kori People led the offense, scoring 22 points on 9-13 shooting.
Alexis Durham filled the stat sheet, finishing the game with 16 points, six assists and six steals. Fitchett also reached double figures, finishing with 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (13-3 overall, 9-0 CSAC) immediately grabbed control of the game, starting with an 11-0 run. The Falcons (0-10 overall, 0-8 CSAC) tried to keep pace, scoring two straight buckets. NDMU responded running off the next 15 points. With 4:10 remaining in the quarter, Fitchett knocked down a jump shot from the baseline, tallying her 1,000
th career point in the process.
Alexis Durham finished the quarter by swishing her second 3-pointer to give the Gators a 29-6 lead. NDMU continued to stretch their advantage in the second quarter with
Elena Rodriguez hitting an 18-foot jump shot to put the team ahead by 30. The Gators scored the final 11 points of the half to lead by 39 points at the break.
NDMU's defense set the tone early in the second half, forcing six straight steal that pushed the Gators lead to 53 points. In complete control of the game, the Gators turned to their depth to close out the victory. They continued to create quality scoring opportunities, allowing the team to cruise to an 87-42 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The Gators' offense was incredibly efficient, shooting 52.1 percent from the field
- People knocked down two 3-pointers, scoring a team-high 22 points
- Alexis Durham controlled the offense, posting 16 points and dishing a team high six assists
- NDMU spread the ball around, recording assists on 27 of the teams' 37 made baskets
- Elena Rodriguez and Michel Rivera each recorded seven points off the bench
- The Gators defense forced 30 turnovers including 20 steals that directly led to 42 points
- Jasimine Gardner led the Gators in rebounds, gathering in eight boards
- Every player on NDMU's roster scored during the game
- The Falcons were led by Ashley Wilson who scored 30 points
HISTORICAL NOTE
Fitchett became the 8
th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She is the second player during the CSAC Era to reach this mark.
WHO'S NEXT
The Gators will hit the road to travel to face Cairn University on Saturday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Earlier this season, the Gators defeated the Highlanders by a score of 93-34.
