Gators Rocket Past Highlanders

Langhorne, Pa.- The Notre Dame (MD) women's basketball team continued rolling, winning their eighth-straight game, defeating Cairn 84-30 on Saturday, Jan. 21. The Gators are now 10-0 in CSAC play. 
 
Kori People led all scorers finishing with 23 points. Alexis Durham added 15 points and Bethani Newbold matched her season-high finishing with 11 points. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (14-3 overall, 10-0 CSAC) jumped out to an early lead, with Newbold finishing a pair of layups to put NDMU ahead 6-0. After a timeout, Alexis Durham drilled a jumper to put the Gators ahead by eight. Later in the quarter, Ayana Brim collected an offensive rebound putting it back make the score 12-4. Durham then hit a 3-pointer from the wing extending the lead to 11 points. The Highlanders (4-12 overall, 2-8 CSAC) responded, scoring four straight points to slash the lead down to seven. People halted the run knocking down a 3-pointer. NDMU scored the final seven points of the quarter to lead 22-8.
 
Alexis Durham started the second quarter with bang, swishing a 3-pointer from the wing. Amya Durham converted a layup and Chantel Curry hit a pair of free throws to grow the lead to 21. After four straight Carin points, Alexis Durham responded with a layup in transition and 3-pointer from the wing. People began to heat up from beyond the arc, swishing a pair of 3-pointers to give NDMU a 30-point lead. The Gators led 46-15 at the half. 
 
NDMU's defense continued to frustrate the Highlanders, helping the Gators continue to pull away. Alexis Jones converted a layup in transition to put NDMU ahead by 41 points. NDMU scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 68-24 going to the final frame. In firm control of the game, the Gators cruised to an 84-30 victory.

  • The Gators shot 44.3 percent from the field
  • People racked up 23 points, including three 3-pointers
  • Alexis Durham finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists
  • NDMU forced 32 turnovers leading to 31 points and 22 points in transition

  • The Gators dominated the boards, finishing with a 52-29 edge in rebounds
  • Daija Fitchett led the team in rebounds, with 10 boards

WHO'S NEXT
The Gators will remain on the road, traveling to face Rosemont College on Wednesday Jan. 25. Earlier this season, the Gators defeated the Ravens by a score of 100-50. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
