BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland men's soccer team completed their first-ever come from behind victory, rallying to earn their first-ever United East victory over Wilson College by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
The Gators (3-5-1 Overall, 1-2 United East) got off to a rough start, conceding a goal to the Phoenix (2-8-1 Overall, 0-2-1 United East) in the 6th minute. NDMU regrouped and began to put pressure on the Wilson defense, with Myles Tanksley and Hector Alvarez each firing shots on frame. The Gators finally broke through in the 28th minute. Cristo Sanchez-Cabrera launched a corner kick into the box which found the feet of Tassilo Lehmkuhl. Lehmkuhl rocketed a shot on goal and a Phoenix defensive player made a great play to keep the ball out of the goal. Lehmkuhl recovered blasting a shot into the back of the net, tying the game at one.
Having captured the momentum, NDMU continued to push the pace hoping to take the lead. Johannes Karlsen rocketed a shot that the Phoenix goalkeeper pushed over the crossbar at the last possible moment. In the 44th minute, Clarence Obiajulu perfectly executed a give-and-go with Lehmkuhl, who crushed a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the game.
The Gators continued to control the flow of the game throughout most of the second half, but they could not find another goal to stretch their lead. Wilson tried to rally in the final minutes putting a ton of pressure on the Gators. In the 89th minute, the Phoenix got a look at an empty net, but Edoardo Simbula made a defensive save to secure the victory.
WHO'S NEXT?
The Gators will hit the road when they travel north to take on Clarks Summit University in a United East matchup on Saturday, Oct. 7. The kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
