Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Carin

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland women's volleyball team picked up their first United East win of the season, defeating Cairn University on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Gators secured the four-set victory thanks to set scores of 25-11, 25-23, 16-25 and 25-21.  

The Gators (7-8 Overall, 1-1 United East) started quickly, dominating the opening set thanks to a powerful offensive attack. Miasia Ferrer continued to be an elite weapon on the outside, slamming down a team high 12 kills in the match. Gabbi Taganas had one of her best outings of the season, recording 11 kills in the match. Jade Stewart also made an impact on offense registering nine kills. The Gators closed the first set on a 9-0 run that featured three service aces from Paulina Hernandez.  

NDMU used the momentum from their first set victory to race out to an early four-point lead in the second set. The Gators setting duo of Emma Mueller and Natalie Newton each posted a double-double with Mueller recording 26 assists and 10 digs while Newton posted 14 assists and 13 digs. The Highlanders (8-7 Overall, 0-1 United East) fought back tying the set at 21. NDMU halted the rally and Ciarra Bockstie slammed down one final kill to secure the set and give NDMU a 2-0 lead. 
 
Cairn jumped out to an early lead in the third set and used that to momentum to capture the set. The Gators looked to respond and close out the match in the fourth set. NDMU tightened up their defense, led by Hernandez who collected 24 digs in the match. She was supported by Stewart and Candace Forgach-Aguilar who recorded a combined 33 digs. NDMU took an 11-8 lead in the set after Shelbey Willson sparked a 7-0 run with two service aces. The teams traded runs and the lead, with NDMU ending the match on a 7-1 securing the victory.

The Gators continue conference play when they host Cairn University on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
