Gators Earn Comeback Victory Over Eastern

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland women's basketball team rallied from an early deficit to beat Eastern University by a score of 54-45 on Friday, Nov. 10.

The Gators did not get off to a strong start as Eastern raced out to a 19-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Amani Watts got the offense going, muscling in a layup in traffic to cut into the deficit. The Gators struck quickly when Sariyah Waller stole the inbound pass and found Chantel Curry for an easy layup. Despite the flurry of offense, NDMU trailed 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Watts kept the offensive rhythm going scoring the first seven points of the quarter for the Gators including converting a three-point play. NDMU continued to chip away at the deficit, closing within two after a free throw by Ny'Asia Futrell. The Eagles responded by stretching their lead back to six in the closing moments of the half. With time winding down, Curry banked in a 3-pointer to make the score 26-23 at the break.

Amya Durham started the second half with a bang, drilling a corner 3-pointer to tie the game at 26. Hillary Howard converted back-to-back layups giving NDMU its first lead of the game. The Gators would go on a 10-0 run, seizing the momentum and the lead. Leading by seven late in the quarter, Watts converted another three-point play to give NDM a 42-32 heading into the final frame.

Howard and Futrell knocked down shots early in the fourth quarter to give NDMU a 12-point advantage with 7:51 remaining in the game. The Eagles surged within six points late in the corner when Curry drew a foul on 3-point attempt, knocking down all three free throws to put the game out of reach. NDMU help on to secure the 54-45 victory.
