Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland women's basketball team dropped their season opener to Salisbury University, falling by a score of 63-41 on Wednesday Nov. 8.  

The Gators got off to a strong start, attacking the paint with newcomer Amani Watts. Watts scored the first six points of the game, converting three layups in traffic to help NDMU build a 6-0 lead. Ny'Asia Futrell knocked down a jump shot, and Thalia Kayiranga powered in a layup to cap off a 12-2 run to open the game. Salisbury battled back, scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull back within four heading into the second quarter.  

Watts continued to control the paint scoring five-straight points early in the second quarter to stretch NDMU's advantage back to seven. The Seagulls continued to fight back going on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 1:04 remaining in the second quarter. Trailing by three in the closing seconds of the half, Futrell drew a foul on 3-point attempt, converting all three free throws to tie the game at 25 going into the break.   

The Gators once again struck first in the second half, with Amya Durham finishing a layup to give NDMU the lead. Salisbury found their groove early in the quarter, going on a 22-3 run to take a commanding 19-point lead. The Gators offense slowed down the stretch and were unable to close within 18-points in the final frame, eventually falling to Salisbury by a score of 63-41. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Watts was impressive in her collegiate debut, leading all scorers with 22 points and earning a double-double with 10 rebounds.  

  • Futrell finished her debut with eight points, going 6-7 at the free throw stripe. 

  • Bethani Newbold recorded a team high five assists.  

  • The Seagulls won the battle on the glass, holding a 42-38 edge in rebounds 

  • Salisbury was led in scoring by Alex Bull and Kayla Nieberlein who each scored 14 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators have a short turnaround and will host Eastern University on Friday, Nov. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
