BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame (Md.) women's lacrosse team overcame a two-hour weather delay to defeat Sweet Briar College by a score 17-2 on Alumni Field on Saturday, Apr. 15.
The Gators got a huge boost from
Sarah Generoso who netted seven goals and dished two assists. Also leading the offensive charge was
Jade Stewart who recorded six goals and handed out three assts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gators (2-9 Overall; 1-2 CSAC) started quickly, with Generoso finding the back on a free position shot just under two minutes into the game. Stewart stretched the lead to scoring her fist goal of the game. Thirty seconds later, Generoso knifed through the defense for her second goal of the game. Generoso and Stewart scored three straight goals, giving NDMU a 6-0 lead.
Emma Alascia took advantage of a free position opportunity, giving the Gators a seven-goal lead. Later in the quarter, the Vixens (1-7 Overall; 0-2 CSAC) got on the board, pulling back within seven goals. Stewart closed the quarter, rocketing a shot into the back of the cage.
The game was halt for over two hours at the conclusion of the first quarter due to dangerous weather conditions. When the game resumed, NDMU continued rolling scoring three quick goals to take a 12-1 lead. Sweet Briar broke up the run, scoring what turned out to be their final goal of the game to remain with 10 goals.
Averee Radonovich scored the final goal of the half, perfectly placing a shot into the back of the cage.
NDMU's 11 goal allowed for a running clock in during the duration of the second half. The Gators added four more goals in the third quarter, putting the game fully out of reach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Generoso set a new career high, scoring seven goals. In addition, she collected seven draw controls and four ground balls.
- Stewart was aggressive on the offensive end of the field, scoring six goals.
- The Gators held a huge edge in shots, outshooting the Vixens 34-7.
- Alascia used her speed to find space, scoring two goals and dishing an assist.
- Radonovich found the back of the net twice, bringing her season total to six.
- NDMU dominated draw controls, winning 20 of the 23 draw controls.
- Sweet Briar was led by Valen Foster, who scored two goals.
