Gators Battle Central Penn to Draw

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland men's soccer team battled Central Penn College to a 1-1 draw on Thursday, Sept. 21. 
 
The Gators (2-3-1 Overall) play a physical first half against the Knights (6-1-1 Overall) with neither team creating many quality scoring opportunities. Cristo Sanchez Cabrera created NDMU's best chance of the half, firing a shot off a free kick that just missed the near post. The game remained scoreless at the half.
 
NDMU ramped up the pressure in the second half, creating several early scoring opportunities. Fernando Rodriguez fired a pair of shots on frame but could not find the back of the net. The Gators earned a free kick in the 74th minute from just outside the box. Ruben Wahl stepped up to take the kick and blasted a shot just under the crossbar to give NDMU the 1-0 lead. 
 
Central Penn tried to immediately respond, creating several quick chances. The Knights broke through and scored in the 87th minute, tying the game at one. NDMU pushed to try to create one last scoring chance, but they could not find a second goal. 
 


NOTABLES
  • Wahl netted his first collegiate goal, striking on a spectacular free kick in the 74th minute.
  • Mateo Gularte made five outstanding saves in goal.
  • Central Penn held the edge in shots, 19-11, but each team was only able to put six shots on frame.
 
WHO'S NEXT?
The Gators will begin United East play, hosting defending conference champions Rosemont College on Wednesday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
