Gators Outlast Lions in Five-Set Thriller

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland women's volleyball team picked up a huge victory, outlasting NCAA Division II foe Lincoln University in five sets on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The Gators (5-7 Overall) secured the victory thanks to set scores of 20-25, 25-15, 26-24, 18-25 and 15-13.

The Gators (5-7 Overall) dropped the opening set, but quickly rebounded in the second set. NDMU's offense began rolling behind Miasia Ferrer. Ferrer slammed down 17 kills in the match. The Gators jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the set, leading by as many 12 points on their way to evening the match a one set a piece.

Lincoln University (3-6 Overall) responded by grabbing an early lead in the third set. NDMU had to battle back, using its defense to win some long rallies. Paulina Hernandez and Jade Stewart anchored the defensive backline, posting 29 and 22 digs in the match. The teams exchanged scoring runs, with the Gators trailing 24-23 and facing the prospect of falling behind in the match. NDMU rallied back, capitalizing on several Lions hitting errors to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

After Lincoln captured the fourth set, the teams headed to a deciding fifth set. The Lions captured the momentum early in the set, racing out to a 6-2 lead. Ferrer swung the momentum back to NDMU's side, hammering down a kill. This sparked a 7-2 run, with a Natalie Newton service ace tying the score at nine. Gabbi Taganas and Ferrer each put down a pair of kills, pushing the Gators to a 14-13 lead. Emma Mueller put an exclamation point on the match, smashing one last kill off the Lions block, securing the thrilling victory.
