Middletown, Pa. – Notre Dame of Maryland's women's volleyball team opened their 2023 season by splitting a tri-match with Goucher College and Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, Sept. 2.
The Gators (1-1) opened the day with a matchup with local foe Goucher College (0-2), dispatching the Gophers in straight sets 25-15, 25-14,25-21. NDMU then faced the hosts Penn State Harrisburg (3-0), falling to the Lions in a highly competitive four set match 20-25, 25-22, 28-30, 18-25.
In the opener against Goucher, NDMU's offensive attack was powered by
Miasia Ferrer who registered a career-high 13 kills on 29 swings, hitting an impressive .345. Defensively,
Paulina Hernandez anchored the back row, recording 17 digs. The Gators controlled the momentum of the match, building early leads on their way to the dominant victory.
The Gators second match of the day with the Lions was a back-and-forth affair, highlighted by the third set that featured 21 lead changes. NDMU came up just short in that set, falling 30-28. The Gators found success with their middle hitters with the duo of
Ciarra Bockstie and
Gabbi Taganas combining for 20 kills.
NOTABLES
- In the win over Goucher, NDMU posted 13 service aces, led by five service aces from Shelbey Willson.
- The setting duo of Emma Mueller and Natalie Newton combined for 28 assists.
- Miasia Ferrer recorded a new career-high in kills, finishing with 13 kills.
- In the matchup with Penn State Harrisburg, Mueller once again filled her stat line, finishing the game with 18 digs, 16 assists and seven kills.
- As a team, NDMU recorded 73 digs, with Jade Stewart, Paulina Hernandez, Newton and Mueller each reaching double-digits.
