Women's Basketball Picks Up 10th Straight Win

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team earned their 10th consecutive victory, fending off a frisky Keystone College squad by a score of 79-63 on Saturday, Jan. 13.   

The Gators started raced out to an early 9-2 lead, sparked by a 3-pointer from Sariyah Waller. After five straight points by the Giants, NDMU answered back, going on a 9-0 run featuring a 3-pointer and jump shot from Amya Durham. Hillary Howard went to work in the paint, scoring several contested baskets to help the Gators build a 26-18 lead going into the second quarter.  

Amani Watts rattled off four consecutive points to open the second quarter. The Gators continued to attack the interior of Keystone's defense with Watts, Howard and Alexis Jones taking turns finishing layups in traffic. NDMU built their lead as large as 16 points during the quarter, but Keystone managed to trim it back down to 10 points in the closing seconds of the quarter. Watts closed the half by coming away with a steal and drawing a foul, hitting two foul shots to give the Gators a 45-33 lead going into the half.  

NDMU continued to attack the paint in the third quarter with Watts powering in several baskets. The Gators went on a 13-2 run midway through the quarter, with the team showing their ability to get out on the break and then get to the basket. Keystone tried to cut into the lead, but they trailed 66-47 heading into the final quarter.  

Watts tried to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter, rattling in four straight points. Durham then got out on a fast break, scoring in transition to take a 23-point lead. Keystone cut into the lead late in the game but could not pull within striking distance, with the Gators winning 79-63.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Watts recorded a new career high, finishing with 28 points including going 14-19 at the free throw line. In addition, Watts recorded her 11th double-double, pulling in 11 rebounds. 

  • Howard found her groove on the offense, racking up 18 points, while hauling in eight rebounds.  

  • Durham filed the stat line, finishing with 12 points, nine assists, three rebounds and two steals.  

  • Jones powered in 12 points, going 4-8 from the field while adding five rebounds.  

  • The Gators controlled the glass, finishing with a 45-39 edge in rebounds. 

  • Keystone was led by Riley Berry and Anyah Ortiz, who each scored 15 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will travel to face Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
