BALTIMORE - The Notre Dame of Maryland men's basketball team picked up a historic first-ever home victory, downing Cairn University by a score of 80-69 on Thursday, Jan. 18.
The Gators got off to a strong start with a 3-pointer by Marquis James putting the team ahead 6-4. Jackson Pugh hit another 3-pointer and Jermaine Koger Jr. powered to the basket for a layup to give NDMU a seven-point lead. K'Won Johnson and Jalen Yates kept the Gators in front, each drilling a 3-pointer. The Highlanders battled back, closing within one point with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half. Later in the half, Dezmyn Nicholson began to heat up, rattling off five-straight points to help the Gators recapture the momentum. Nicholson hit one more 3-pointer before half, helping NDMU hold a 38-32 lead at the break.
Johnson fired up the crowd early in the second half, swiping a steal and racing to the other end of the floor a contested layup to put the Gators ahead by 10 points. The Highlanders answered back going on a 10-1 run to back within a point of the Gators. The teams traded the lead with Yates finishing a layup in transition to put NDMU ahead 61-60. After Cairn retook the lead, Johnson converted an athletic layup to put the Gators back in front. After a couple of layups, Nicholson drilled a 3-pointer to push the lead to seven. Yates hit one more 3-pointer to put the game out of reach, securing the 80-69 victory.

Nicholson made a major impact off the bench, netting a career-high 23 points while going 4-6 from beyond the arc.

Johnson was aggressive offensively, scoring 17 points while collecting eight rebounds.

Yates found his groove from beyond the arc, going 3-4 from distance resulting in 15 points.

Koger Jr. was a constant threat in the paint, racking up 10 points.

The Highlanders were led by Aytor Alberto who scored 22 points.

The Gators will continue their homestand, hosting Skye Division leader Bryn Athyn College on Saturday, Jan. 20. The tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
