Gators Blast Past Clarks Summit For Seveth-Straight Win

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team earned their seventh-straight win, defeating Clarks Summit University by a score 86-48 on Wednesday, January 3.  

The Gators raced out to a fast start, racing out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes behind two layups by Amani Watts and a 3-pointer from Amya Durham. The Defenders responded out of a timeout, scoring five-straight points to close within two. Hillary Howard slowed the run, powering in a layup to push the advantage back to four. Sariyah Waller and Watts hit shots to trade baskets with Clarks Summit, but the Gators lead was cut back down to one with 3:40 remaining in the opening quarter. NDMU attacked the post, with Watts and Howard combining to score six-straight points. Alexis Jones hit a jumper in the final seconds of the quarter, giving the Gators a 24-19 lead heading into the second quarter.  

NDMU started to pull away in the second quarter with Durham hitting a jump shot and Jones converting a three-point play to build an eight-point lead. Watts then went to work in the post, scoring six-straight points in the post, to push the advantage to 12 points. Watts and Howard continued to pound away on the inside, taking a 16-point advantage with 1:49 remaining in regulation. Elena Rodriguez converted two free throws in the final minute to hold an 18-point lead into the half. 

The Gators took complete control of the game early in the second half, scoring the first 17 points of the third quarter, holding a 35-point advantage. With the large lead, NDMU turned to their bench to get some valuable playing time. Michel Rivera closed the quarter by hitting a jump shot off an offensive rebound, leading 68-35 heading into the final quarter. In the final quarter, Charlie Henry and Rodriguez hit jump shots continuing to build the lead. NDMU rolled down the stretch, powering to an 86-48 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Watts led the Gators with 24 points and eight rebounds in only 22 minutes of action.  

  • Jones reached double figures, scoring 11 points. 

  • Howard filled the stat sheet, scoring 10 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out four assists. 

  • Durham was incredibly effective, scoring 10 points by connecting on a pair of 3-pointers while leading the team with five assists.  

  • Waller made her first career start, scoring seven points. 

  • The Gators held a 43-32 edge in rebounds, resulting in 17 second-chance points. 

  • The Defenders were led by Serene Calderon who scored 20 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will hit the road, traveling to face Cairn University on Saturday, Jan. 6. The tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
