Women's Basketball Takes Down Cairn

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team powered past Cairn University by a score of 80-52 on Saturday, Jan. 6.   

The Gators took an early lead with Bethani Newbold slashing to the basket for a pair of layups. Amani Watts put NDMU ahead by three, powering in a layup off an offensive rebound. Amya Durham knocked down a jump shot, and Watts followed that up with another layup, giving NDMU a 10-5. Alexis Jones joined the action, swishing two jumpers. Durham closed the quarter with one more jumper, giving NDMU an 18-13 advantage heading into the second quarter.  

Hillary Howard opened the second quarter by finishing a layup in the paint. After a Watts layup, Michel Rivera scored five straight points including a 3-pointer to push the Gators advantage to 15 points. Newbold closed out the 12-0 run with a steal and score. NDMU continued to control the flow of the game with Chantel Curry and Durham each knocking down 3-pointers. Elena Rodriguez closed out the half with a jump to give the Gators a 45-21 lead at the break.  

Cairn tried to climb back into the game in the third quarter, opening on a 13-4 run to close back within 15 points. Curry halted the rally with a jump shot before Watts went back to work in the interior. Watts then got out on the break, earning a three-point play in transition to push the lead back to 25 points. Rivera hit her second 3-pointer of the game in the closing seconds of the quarter to give the Gators a 64-38 lead heading to the final quarter. Watts scored the first four points of the fourth quarter pushing the lead to 30 points. In complete control of the game, the Gators used their depth to close out the victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Watts had another outstanding performance, scoring 23 points and hauling in 15 rebounds. 

  • Durham recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and dishing out 10 assists. 

  • Rivera reached double figures, scoring 13 points including a pair of 3-pointers.  

  • Newbold had a strong outing, scoring nine points.  

  • The Gators forced 29 turnovers leading directly to 32 points.  

  • The Highlanders were led by Taylor Hinson who scored 22 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will remain on the road, traveling to face Rosemont College on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
