Gators Stunned in Road Matchup with Falcons

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team fell for the first time this season in conference play, losing to Cedar Crest College by a score of 55-52 on Tuesday, Jan. 30. 

The Gators took an early lead, starting the game on an 8-2 run featuring four layups from Hillary Howard. Amya Durham pushed the lead to nine hitting a 3-pointer. The Falcons battled back going on a 6-0 to pull back within three points. Alexis Jones ended the opening quarter by scoring four points, including a three-point play to give NDMU a 15-8 lead. Jones kept her momentum going in the opening minutes of the second quarter, hitting a layup. Cedar Crest fought back closing within four points with 7:21 remaining in the quarter. The defenses slowed down both offenses, with NDMU holding a 25-18 lead going into the half. 

NDMU struggled in the third quarter, only scoring six total points in the quarter. Cedar Crest capitalized on the Gators shooting struggles, scoring 14 points to take a 32-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Howard put NDMU back in front early in the fourth quarter, converting a layup in traffic. The Falcons responded, going on a 10-0 run to seize momentum and a nine-point lead. The Gators tried to battle back, pulling within two points down the stretch, but could not retake the lead, falling 55-52.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Howard led the Gators in scoring, finishing the game with 16 points. 

  • Durham finished the game with 12 points adding six rebounds. 

  • Jones posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. 

  • Bethani Newbold ended the game with seven points and 13 rebounds. 

  • The Falcons were led by Caylie Long who scored 27 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will continue their road trip, traveling to face Clarks Summit University on Saturday, Feb. 3. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
