Women's Basketball Improves to 16-1 in Conference Play

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team improved to 16-1 in United East play, defeating Keystone College by a score of 67-56.   

The Gators fell behind early as Keystone captured the early momentum, taking a 5-2 lead. NDMU fought back, taking their first lead of the game after a jumper by Sariyah Waller. Keystone answered back, going on a 13-2 run, holding a 10-point lead with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter. The Gators fought back scoring the six points of the quarter, capped off by two free throws from Alexis Jones to make the score 18-14 going into the second quarter.  

Amya Durham heated up early in the second quarter, scoring five-straight points including hitting a 3-pointer to put NDMU up 19-18. The teams would trade the lead throughout the quarter, with a layup by Hillary Howard, putting NDMU ahead 25-22. Howard struck two more times in the final minute, giving NDMU a 29-24 lead heading into the break.  

Howard started the scoring in the second half, finishing a layup off a great feed by Bethani Newbold. After five straight points by Keystone, Waller knocked down a jumper to keep the Gators ahead by six. NDMU began to pull away, taking a 43-31 lead after a layup by Jones. The Gators remained in control throughout the fourth quarter, with Howard scoring two more layups to push the lead to 13 points. Chantel Curry and Newbold connected on some clutch free throws down the stretch, securing the 67-56 victory.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Howard led the Gators in scoring, finishing with a game-high 26 points along with six rebounds.  

  • Jones recorded a double-double, posting 10 points and 16 rebounds. 

  • Curry reached double figures, scoring 10 points, going 8-8 at the free throw line.  

  • Newbold dished out a team-high seven assists, while scoring six points and grabbing six rebounds.  

  • Durham hit once from beyond the arc, scoring nine points. 

  • Keystone was led in scoring by Riley Berry, scoring 13 points.  

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will conclude the regular season, traveling to face Wilson College on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
