Women's Basketball Celebrates Senior Night with Win

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland University women's basketball team celebrated senior night by routing Rosemont College, picking up their 15th conference victory by a score of 90-34 on Wednesday, Feb. 7. 

The Gators took immediate control of the game, racing out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to five quick points from Senior Chantel Curry. Curry would then swipe a steal, finding Amya Durham in transition to extend the lead. Later in the opening quarter, Durham drilled a 3-pointer from the corner, making the score 18-8. Hillary Howard scored in transition in the final seconds of the quarter, giving NDMU an 11-point advantage heading to the second quarter.  

NDMU continued to attack the paint throughout the second quarter, with Alexis Jones and Yasmeen Yussuf scoring contested layups. Howard then rattled off six-straight points, growing the Gators lead to 19 points. The Gators controlled the flow of play, taking a 41-21 lead into the break.  

The second half was dominated by the Gators, thanks to a smothering defensive effort. NDMU held Rosemont to 13 total second half points, forcing 22 turnovers including 14 steals. Bethani Newbold and Curry led the charge, turning defense into offense. Newbold scored a couple of layups in transition including one that turned into a three-point play, building a 30-point lead. In full control of the game, the Gators emptied their bench, with 11 different players scoring. Thalia Kayiranga and Kathryn DeGrange each had career best outings, combining to score 12 points and pull in 12 rebounds. NDMU pulled away down the stretch, scoring 23 fourth quarter points to earn 90-34 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Howard again led the Gators in scoring, racking up 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. 

  • Curry stuffed the stat sheet in her final regular season home game, scoring 16 points, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out six assists and swiping six steals.  

  • Durham had a strong outing, scoring 16 points along with five rebounds and four assists. 

  • Newbold hustled on both ends of the floor, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds while playing tenacious defense. 

  • Kayiranga had one of her best career games, scoring eight points while grabbing eight rebounds.  

  • Rosemont was led in scoring by Danaijah Wise and Mojisola Shokeye who each scored nine points. 

WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will head out on the road for their final two regular season games, traveling to face Keystone College on Saturday, Feb. 10. The tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
