BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland Women's SoccerTeam started the season on a strong note, taking down Penn St. Mont Alto by a score of 1-0 on Friday, Aug. 30.
The Gators slowly settled into the game, relying on their defense to keep the game tied. Starting goalkeeper Makaylah Reyes made five saves to stymie the Lions offense. Kathryn DeGrange jump started the offense, recording the first scoring chance of the game with a shot that just sailed over the crossbar. NDMU began to take control of the run of play, creating more scoring chances. The Gators broke through when Jillian Seay deflected a ball near midfield allowing Malaika Habib to create a breakaway, which ended in her first career goal. NDMU held a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Gators continued to keep a solid defense in the second half to ensure their successful outcome. Specifically, Leah Hasberry, a goalie for the Gators, had three big saves to secure the victory for NDMU.
