Women's Volleyball Sweeps Penn St. York

BALTIMORE- The Notre Dame of Maryland Women's Volleyball Team used a great defensive effort to take down Penn St. York in straight sets on Saturday, Sept. 21. 
 
NDMU found themselves in a tight battle throughout the opening set, with the teams trading points resulting in a 10-10 tie. Later in the Miasia Ferrer slammed down a kill to 7-0 run to push the lead to nine. Gwen Abnett closed out the set victory with one final kill, giving the Gators a 1-0 advantage. 
 
Penn St. York pulled away early in the second set, taking a 9-5 lead. The Gators fought back with Paulina Hernandez registered two services during a 5-0 run. The Lions answered back and eventually held a 24-20 lead. Rosemary O'Brien won back the serve, keeping the set alive with a kill. Hernandez's serve kept the Lions off balance and allowed Emily Gordon and Ciarra Bockstie to register kills sending the set into a win by two situation. Out of subs, the Gators capitalized on a block by Bockstie and Natalie Newton securing the 29-27 set victory. 
 
NDMU capitalized on the momentum from their second set rally, building a 15-11 lead in the third set. The Lions remained in striking distance throughout the set by a kill and service ace by Jade Stewart closed out the sweep.
 
The Gators' Offense was led by Ferrer and Gordon who each finished the match with 14 kills. Bockstie made an impact at the net, finishing the match with eight kills and two total blocks. NDMU had three players reach double digit assists with Emma Mueller leading the way with 17,  Newton posting 14 and Shelbey Willson finishing with 11 assists. Defensively, Hernandez had her best showing of the season, registering an impressive 37 digs. Candace Forgach-Aguilar also reach double figures with 10 assists. 
 
WHO'S NEXT 
The Gators will remain at home, hosting Washington College (MD) on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The match is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
