Gators Battle Back, Marymount Holds On in Doubleheader Sweep

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Notre Dame of Maryland softball team hosted Marymount on Wednesday afternoon in a home doubleheader, falling 10–0 (5 innings) in game one and 10–4 in a hard-fought game two.

Game One- Notre Dame of Maryland 0 - Marymount 10 (5 innings)

After a quiet first inning for both sides, the Saints pushed across three runs in the second inning and six runs in the third inning. The Gators, however, continued to respond with competitive at-bats. 

Notre Dame's best offensive showing came in the fourth inning when Julianna Leatherwood reached base on an error and moved into scoring position, while Claire Smith and Raegan Perkes delivered back-to-back singles to load the bases. Despite the threat, Marymount was able to work out of the inning and maintain the shutout.

The Gators struggled offensively with only recording four hits in the game. In the circle Malorie Gogel recorded the loss allowing eight hits and ten runs, with four strikeouts.

Game Two- Notre Dame of Maryland 4 - Marymount 10

Notre Dame wasted no time setting the tone in game two, turning in a productive offensive inning. Down 2-0, with two outs in the first inning, Leatherwood and Smith each singled before L.Hafner delivered a three-run home run to right-center to give the Gators a 3–2 lead. Cancel

The Gators added to their lead in the third inning from Leatherwood when she came through with an RBI single to pad the lead to 4-2.

Marymount answered in the fourth with a two-RBI double tying the game 4-4. Moments later, the Saints drove in the lead changing run to now lead 5-4.

With multiple hits and a walk, Marymount found themselves with a 9-4 advantage through five innings. The Saints drove in one additional run in the sixth inning to win the game 10-4.

L. Hafner led the Gators going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's and a run scored. Leatherwood added her part in the mix with two hits, one RBI, and one run scored.

Leatherwood took the loss in the circle, allowing nine runs and five runs. 

The Gators will look to improve on the year when they host Keystone College for the United East Conference opener on Saturday, March 28th. Game one start time is scheduled for 1 PM.
