Cichoki Heroics Lead to Gators First Win of Season

ABERDEEN, MD - The Notre Dame of Maryland baseball team continued its early-season schedule with a three-game series against Stevenson at the Ripken Complex in Aberdeen, Maryland. After dropping the opener on March 6, the Gators battled back across a doubleheader on March 7, falling in the first game before earning a high-scoring victory in the series finale.

Game 1: Stevenson 17- Notre Dame of Maryland 2

Stevenson jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the series opener, defeating the Gators 17–2 on March 6.

The Mustangs broke the game open in the second inning, plating six runs highlighted by RBI singles from Kaige Garrity and Ben Vaughan to take a commanding early advantage. Stevenson continued to add on throughout the game, finishing with 22 hits in the victory.

Notre Dame managed four hits in the contest and got on the board in the seventh inning. Brendan Altman and Zane Cook each reached base before Ben Boyer delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to bring home both runners for the Gators' only runs of the game.

Game 2: Stevenson 7 - Notre Dame of Maryland 3

Stevenson jumped out early and never trailed as Notre Dame fell 7–3 in the first game of the series.

The Mustangs struck quickly in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs with the help of two Notre Dame errors. After a leadoff single and double set the table, a sacrifice fly plated the first run before a pair of fielding miscues allowed two more to score for a 3–0 lead.

Stevenson added another run in the second inning on an RBI single by Graham Sears to extend the lead to 4–0.

Notre Dame responded in the third as Luke Thompson came around to score on a wild pitch before Altman followed with an RBI single to center field that cut the deficit to 4–2.

The Mustangs answered in the fourth inning, capitalizing again on defensive miscues to push two unearned runs across and make it 6–2. Stevenson later added another unearned run in the fifth to extend the margin to 7–2.

Notre Dame threatened in the seventh when Gavin Boughton walked and moved to third on a pair of balks before Chase Cichocki delivered an RBI single down the right-field line to make it 7–3. The rally ended there as Stevenson recorded the final two outs to close the game.

Cichocki finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Altman added an RBI single. Ben Boyer recorded Notre Dame's lone extra-base hit with a double.

On the mound, Brennan Deremeik took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) over three innings, while Aj Williams tossed four innings in relief and allowed three runs, all unearned.

Game 3: Stevenson 9 - Notre Dame of Maryland 15

The Gators bounced back in the nightcap, exploding for 15 runs and 14 hits to defeat Stevenson 15–9 in a wild offensive contest to earn their first win of the season.

Stevenson scored twice in the top of the first, but Notre Dame immediately answered. Cichocki doubled to lead off the inning and later scored before Deremeik drove in a run with a single and Ryan Parks added a sacrifice bunt RBI to tie the game 2–2.

Notre Dame took control in the second inning as Brayden Valle's single sparked the rally before aggressive baserunning and timely hits from Altman and Cook helped the Gators plate three runs and take a 5–2 lead.

The Gators continued to pressure Stevenson pitching throughout the game, adding single runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to build an 8–5 advantage.

Stevenson mounted a dramatic comeback in the eighth inning. A three-run double from Landen Eyster capped a four-run rally that briefly gave the Mustangs a 9–8 lead.

Notre Dame responded emphatically in the bottom half of the inning with its biggest offensive burst of the day. Cichocki delivered the decisive blow with a grand slam to right field as part of a seven-run inning that turned the deficit into a 15–9 lead.

Cichocki led the offensive charge, going 4-for-6 with three runs, four RBIs and the grand slam. Cook added three hits and three runs scored, while Parks drove in three runs. Mark Reineke also contributed two hits and two runs for the Gators.

Matthew Murdock earned the win in relief, throwing the final three innings while allowing four runs. Donny White started and worked six innings for Notre Dame, allowing five runs while striking out six.

The Gators will get back in action on Monday, March 9 with a doubleheader against Kings College starting at 12 PM as the games will once again be played at the Ripken Complex in Aberdeen, MD. The Lions are 0-2 on the season after having several games postponed early in the season.
