Baseball drops United East playoff opener; Game Two halted due to darkness

JENKINTOWN, Pa.- The Notre Dame of Maryland University baseball team dropped its first game in the United East playoffs on Friday, losing a slugfest to Penn State Abington, 23-8.

In game two, the Gators and Nittany Lions played another pinball game, which was halted at the top of the ninth due to darkness, with the Nittany Lions leading 19-18. The game will be resumed at noon on Saturday. If Notre Dame can rally to win, game three will be played 30 minutes after that.

In the first game, Notre Dame scored seven runs in the top of the second inning with RBI hits from Ryan Parks, Carter Nocca, Hunter Beil, Zane Cook, and a two-run hit from Chase Cichocki.

After Abington scored four in the third, Notre Dame struck back with one in the fourth on a throwing error, which allowed Hunter Beil to score.

Abington took the lead by scoring two in the fifth, four in the sixth and 11 in the eighth.

Cichocki, Brennan Deremeik, and Parks each had two hits in the loss, while Cichocki had two RBI.

Six pitchers took the hill for the Gators, with Matthew Murdock taking the loss in relief of AJ Williams.
