DUNDALK, MD - The College of Notre Dame softball team made its program debut Saturday afternoon but fell in both games of a doubleheader against Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Centenary, played at CCBC-Dundalk. The Gators were no-hit in game one, losing by a 26-0 score. Notre Dame did have several opportunities to score in game two, but dropped that decision by an 8-0 score. Notre Dame starts off its 2009 campaign with a 0-2 record while Centenary begins its season with a 2-0 mark.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, batting around in the first four innings and scoring in every frame of the 26-0, five inning game. Cyclone sophomore pitcher no-hit the Gators while striking out 14 of 16 batters faced.
Notre Dame senior outfielder Katryn Ellis (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) recorded the first hit in Gator softball history in the second game of the day. Ellis roped a single down the left field line to lead off game two. Ellis finished the game going 2-for-2 with a walk. But those two hits from Ellis would be the only ones the Gators would buy all day as Centenary was able to hold Notre Dame scoreless. The Cyclones registered their eighth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 8-0 victory.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Taylor (Edgewood, MD/Harford Tech.) started and pitched four innings in game two, giving up just two earned runs. Centenary pitcher Kristin Durborow tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing Ellis' two hits while walking four and striking out 13,
Notre Dame will take to the road Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at CSAC opponent Neumann.
