BEL AIR, MD - Visiting Immaculata swept College of Notre Dame in a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Monday afternoon. The Mighty Macs (3-8 overall, 3-3 CSAC) won game one by a 5-0 score and took game two 12-1. The Gators fall to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play with the losses.
Nicole Curcione tossed a complete game one-hitter in game one to pace the Mighty Macs to the 5-0 victory. Curcione had a no hitter going until junior Ashley Taylor (Edgewood, MD/Harford Tech) was able to reach base with a bunt single. Curcione got the final two Notre Dame hitters out, allowing just the one hit and a walk while striking out nine. Notre Dame freshman pitcher Kirsten Smulovitz (Fallston, MD/Towson Catholic) took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs while striking out four in the complete game effort.
Notre Dame got off to an early 1-0 lead in game two. The Gators led off with four straight singles, capped off by an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Katie Murphy (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly).
Immaculata came right back with two runs in the top of the second and added another run in the third inning to make the score 3-1. The Mighty Macs blew the game open in the fifth inning, led by a 2-RBI single off the bat of Sara Halloren. Immaculata scored six more times in the sixth inning en route to the 12-1, six inning win.
Murphy finished the second game going 2-for-2 at the dish with a triple, single, RBI and stolen base for Notre Dame.
Allison Zborowski earned the win for Immaculata, allowing eight hits and an earned run while striking out three.
The Gators return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at CSAC opponent Cabrini.
