Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- Notre Dame of Maryland University's softball team set a new school record for wins in a season after defeating Cairn University 7-4 in Monday's nightcap of a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Gators faced an early 1-0 deficit in the first inning, but bounced back to take a 2-1 lead after the inning's final out. Freshman
Stephanie Miller (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a bunt by junior
Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor). Junior
Brea Kehr (Dundalk, Md./Bridgewater) knocked Miller across the plate with a single. Kehr advanced to second on a single by junior
Colleen McCauley (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) and scored on a single by junior
Marylu Ortiz (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino).
The Highlanders managed to tally two more runs in their third inning to take a 3-2 lead heading into Notre Dame's third inning, but a McCauley doubled to score Kehr to notch the game at 3-3.
Cairn again answered and the Gators faced another one-run deficit as they entered the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior
Aubrey Janson (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) began the inning with a single, and advanced to third on an error by the visitors on a ball hit by freshman
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.). Miller followed with a single to score Janson.
Cevora reached first on a fielders choice that got Pedersen out at third then Miller and Cevora gave the Gators two runners in scoring position after a Highlander wild pitch. Miller gave Notre Dame their second run of the inning and a 5-3 lead after another Cairn error.
With Cevora on third and Kehr on second base, Ortiz singled and scored both runners to give Notre Dame a 7-3 lead which proved to be enough for the Gators victory. Junior pitcher
Ashley Fallon (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) threw six innings to claim her fifth victory of the season with Miller recording her first career save.
In the opener, Fallon gave Notre Dame a 1-0 lead after walking and advancing across the plate with singles by Janson and Pedersen to load the bases, and walk by Miller. However, the run wouldn't be enough as the Highlanders tied the game in the fifth inning and added two more in the sixth to claim a 3-1 game one win.
Notre Dame will now look to become the first team in program history to reach double-figure wins as they will travel to Cabrini College on Friday. The team will conclude their 2014 season on Saturday by hosting Keystone College.
