Softball Sets Program History In Victory Over Keystone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. --  Notre Dame of Maryland University set softball program history with an 11-8 victory over Keystone College in Saturday's Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader.  The victory marked the team's 10th win of the year, marking the first time in program history a team reached double-digit victories in a season.

In the opener, the Gators used strong middle innings to power to their history-making victory.  The hosts took an early 1-0 lead into the third inning after freshman Stephanie Miller (Darnestown, Md./Northwest) scored on a single by junior Brea Kehr (Dundalk, Md./Bridgewater College).  The Giants answered by notching five runs in the third inning, taking advantage of two Notre Dame errors.  The hosts responded with two runs in their third when junior Heather Lancellotti (Perry Hall, Md.) knocked in Kehr and junior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va. Lake Taylor) to make the score 5-3. 

Keystone added another run in the top of the fourth inning to add to their lead before the Gators notched three runs in the to tie the game.  With two outs and bases loaded, junior Colleen McCauley (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) knocked a ball into the right field, and despite a diving effort, the fielder couldn't come up with the ball, allowing Miller, Cevora and Kehr to score and notch the game at 6-6.

After holding the visitors scoreless Notre Dame again answered by putting three across the plate.  Junior Ashley Fallon (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) hit a double to score Ortiz. A walk by freshman Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.) put runners on first and second, which Miller batted in when she smashed her fifth triple of the season to secure a 9-6 lead.

To open sixth inning, the Giants posted two more runs to narrow the Gators lead to just 9-8,but Notre Dame responded with their own two runs.  Kehr and McCauley began the inning with back-to-back doubles, with Kehr scoring on McCauley.  With two outs and McCauley still on second base, junior Aubrey Janson (Baltimore, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) hit the team's third double of the inning to score McCauley, giving the hosts an 11-8 lead. 

Fallon came in to pitch and closed out the game to give Notre Dame an 11-8 victory and their tenth win of the season. 

In game two, Keystone came back strong and rallied behind a 12-run second inning on their way to a 16-5 victory.  The game was highlighted by Miller setting the school record for stolen bases, finishing her rookie season a perfect 19 of 19 on stolen base attempts.

On the season, the squad improved in nearly every offensive category, posting better numbers in team batting average and slugging percentage while hitting for more doubles, triples and home runs while knocking in more RBI's.  The team also raised the number of strikeouts while raising the number of stolen bases.
