Box Score 2 Washington, D.C. -- Notre Dame of Maryland University scored eight runs over the first three innings on their way to defeating Gallaudet University 13-8 in their season opener on Saturday.
However, the Gators were unable to overcome a fifth inning rally to SUNY-Cobleskill and fell in Saturday's second game 6-3.
Freshman
Jennifer Whiting (Perry Hall, Md.) paced the team with four hits on the day, including one double. Senior
Ashley Fallon (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood), sophomore
Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) and freshman
Meghan O'Connor (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) each added three hits with O'Connor also knocking a double. Winkelman and O'Connor both posted a team-high three runs batted in. Senior
Brea Kehr (Dundalk, Md./Bridgewater College) paced the Gators with four runs.
From the pitching circle, senior
Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) led the way with four strikeouts and her first complete game victory of the season. Fallon threw two strikeouts in the nightcap.
Cevora opened the day with a walk. After advancing to second on a Kehr single, Cevora scored on a Gallaudet throwing error to score the Gators first run of 2015. Kehr would cross the plate to give Notre Dame the early 2-0 lead off a single by Whiting.
The Gators added three more runs in the second inning with Fallon starting the inning with a single and advanced to third off another Gallaudet throwing error, this time off a bunt by sophomore
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.). The pair would then take advantage of a Bison error off a ball hit by Kehr to move the lead to 4-0. With Kehr on second base, she would steal third and then score her second run of the day off another Whiting single.
The hosts would answer and tie the game at 5-5 after they would notch five runs in their second inning, but Notre Dame responded by adding three more runs in the third inning. Two errors and a sacrifice bunt would move Fallon to third to start the inning and she would then score off the Bison's third error of the inning. Winkelman would score Cevora and sophomore
Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) would notch the third run of the inning off a single by O'Connor, giving Notre Dame an 8-5 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Gators would add five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to push their lead to 13-5 and would withstand a three-run inning in the Bison's fifth inning to capture the 13-8 season-opening victory.
In the second game of the day, Notre Dame would again take an early lead, as Fallon would knock in both Winkelman and O'Connor on a single. SUNY Cobleskill would respond with three runs in the second, but Kehr would tie the game after reaching base on a walk and scoring on multiple errors.
The teams would hold each other scoreless over the next innings befor the Tigers mustered three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to capture the 6-3 victory.
Notre Dame returns to action Sunday as they will return to Gallaudet to take on the hosts and SUNY Cobleskill. The Gators take on the Tigers at 11 a.m. and will return to take on Gallaudet at 3 p.m.
