Softball Falls To Gwynedd Mercy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Gwynedd Valley, Pa.  --  Notre Dame of Maryland University's softball team fell to Gwynedd Mercy University in their Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.  

Sophomore Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) paced the Gators with three hits, including two doubles, and two runs batted in.  Senior Brea Kehr (Dundalk, Md./Bridgewater College) finished the day with a team-high three runs.  

In the opener, Gwynedd Mercy took advantage of a big first inning on their way to a 22-2 victory.  In the nightcap, Notre Dame jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, when sophomore Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) scored on a ball hit by freshman Meghan O'Connor (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) and Kehr would stole home later in the inning.   

The Griffins would score a run in their second inning to make it 2-1 after two innings.  In the fourth inning, Notre Dame would again score two more runs, Winkelman's double would score senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) and she would then cross the plate by stealing home.  However, the hosts would tally three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.  

Gwynedd Mercy would score a run in the sixth inning to give them their first lead of game two.  In the top of the seventh inning, Kehr would get on base with a single then scored on Winkelman's second double of the game.  Unfortunately, the Griffins would knock a walk-off home run to capture the 7-5 victory. 

The Gators will look to rebound on Thursday as they will visit Marywood University.  The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. and can be viewed using live stats.
