Box Score 2 Riverdale, Md.. -- Notre Dame of Maryland University's softball team collected their first sweep of the season after defeating Trinity Washington University 21-0 and 10-2 in a matchup of local rivals.
Sophomore
Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) led the offense with six hits, including two doubles, and added five runs batted in. Freshman
Meghan O'Connor (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) finished with five hits and a team-high six RBI's. She also posted a double and a triple.
Junior
Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) notched the team lead by scoring five runs and also chipped in with five RBI's. Senior
Brea Kehr (Dundalk, Md./Bridgewater College) added four hits and four RBI's. Sophomores
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.),
Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) and freshman
Jennifer Whiting (Perry Hall, Md.) all contributed four runs each in the doubleheader.
Cevora threw 11 strikeouts in her first shutout of the season. Senior
Ashley Fallon (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) had six strikeouts in game two.
Cevora began the day with a single and scored on an O'Connor double and after a Kehr single, O'Connor would score on a double steal with Kehr. Winkelman advanced Kehr to third on an error by the hosts, and the pair would again take advantage of a double steal to allow Kehr to score. Six straight batters would then walk, allowing the Gators to score four more runs. The Gators would then score their eighth run off a fielders choice by Kehr.
The Gators would go on to score four runs in both the second and third inning and add one more in the fourth inning. Notre Dame extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning by adding four more runs to take the 21-0 victory. The 21 runs are the most runs scored since a 24-17 victory over University of Valley Forge in the 2012 season.
In game two, Notre Dame posted three runs in the opening frame, and after the hosts scored two runs in their inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Gators would add two more runs in the third inning to increase their advantage to 6-2.
A four run inning in the top of the fourth inning improved the lead to 9-2, with one more run in the fifth inning gave Notre Dame the 10-2 win and secured the first sweep of the season.
Notre Dame will now enjoy some time off after playing three doubleheaders in three days and will return to action on Friday to take on Colonial States Athletic Conference rival Rosemont College.
