Box Score 2 Staunton, Va. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team travelled to Mary Baldwin College in a matchup of women's colleges for the team's season opener Sunday.
The Gators were led by four players who tied for the team's led with two hits. S
enior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor), junior
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.), and freshmen
Madison King (Virgina Beach, Va./Bayside) and
Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Shady Creek) all notched two hits. King added three runs batted in while Pedersen and Cevora each notched a double. Pedersen paced the team with two runs scored with Cevora, Taylor and
Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) chipped in with a run each.
From the mound, King posted three strikeouts in her debut while Cevora added two strikeouts.
In the fourth inning of the first game, Taylor scored off a King single to left field. However, it would be the lone run of the game for the Gators as the squad fell 10-1. In the third inning of the nightcap, Cevora doubled down the left field line to score Pedersen.
Notre Dame highlighted the doubleheader with four runs in the fourth inning. Pedersen singled down the right field line to score Gordon to open the inning. After advancing to third, Pedersen took advantage of a wild pitch to score her second run of the day. King would then single down the left field line a second time allowing Cevora and freshman
Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/Escuela International Sampedrana) to score
. Unfortunately, it would not be enough as Mary Baldwin bested Notre Dame 13-5.
The Gators will return to action on Sunday as they visit Christendom College in a nonconference matchup.
