Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team swept SUNY Cobleskill 5-2 and 15-7 in the Gators home opening doubleheader.
Senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) and freshman
Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) finished with a team-high four hits. Freshman
Samantha Kastner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and
Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) each added three hits. Freshman
Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) chipped in with two triples with Cevora also posting a triple. Kastner finished the two games with two doubles while King and Cevora also recorded a double.
Gordon paced the team with five runs batted in with King and Kastner aiding the effort with four RBI's each. Cevora led the team with four runs and King, Taylor and junior
Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) contributed three runs.
From the mound, Cevora paced the squad with seven strikeouts. King posted five while allowing just two runs.
After keeping the Fighting Tigers scoreless in the first inning, Notre Dame took an early 2-0 lead in their first inning. Cevora opened up the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the SUNY Cobleskill catcher trying to throw Taylor out at first. Kastner would knock in Cevora and Taylor on a ball hit to the outfield. Cevora scored easily from second, with Taylor following her across the plate when the Tigers pitcher mishandled the throw.
SUNY Cobleskill tied the game in the top of the third inning taking advantage of a Notre Dame throwing error. After two more scoreless innings, the Gators re-took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. After King and Ward opened the inning with singles, the pair advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch.
With runners on second and third, Gordon knocked a ball into the outfield for a triple, allowing King and Ward to score. Gordon then took advantage of an error by the third baseman to score and give Notre Dame a 5-2 lead, which proved to be enough as the Gators took the victory.
To open the nightcap, the Tigers scored three runs in the first inning to give them an early lead. But the Gators answered immediately, scoring four runs in their first inning. King doubled and scored Cevora and Winkelman, and then took advantage of a throw to second when Ward stole second base. Ward advanced the third when the Tigers attempt of throwing King out at home was too late. Ward gave Notre Dame the 4-3 lead when she scored on a passed ball.
The Gators extended their lead in the fourth inning. Freshman
Brenda Diazdelvalle (Rockville, Md.) was able to advance to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kastner. Junior
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.) then scored on a single by King. With bases load, Ward walked to score Taylor. Gordon followed it with her second triple of the day, scoring Ward, King and Winkelman, giving Notre Dame a 10-3 lead after two innings.
After SUNY Cobleskill scored a run in the fourth inning, the Cevora and Kastner hit back-to-back doubles, with Kastner hitting Cevora home and moving the score to 11-4 entering the fifth inning.
The Tigers narrowed their deficit to 11-7 by knocking in three run to open the fifth inning. After an early out, Notre Dame hit three straight singles to load the bases. Pedersen then scored when Kastner was walked. Winkelman followed it with a two-RBI single to score Taylor and Cevora. With Kastner on third, Winkleman would steal second to provide King two runners in scoring position. King capitalized and ended the game with a single to score Kastner, giving the Gators the 15-7 victory.
With the victories, Notre Dame improves to 2-2 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday as they visit local rival Gallaudet University.
