Softball Drops Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Washington D.C.  --  Notre Dame of Maryland University's softball team visited local rival Gallaudet University Wednesday but fell to the Bison in the non conference doubleheader.

Senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) posted two doubles on the afternoon.  Freshman Samantha Kastner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added two hits and one run batted in.  Freshman Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) notched a hit with two RBI's.  King also recorded four strikeouts while pitching ten innings.   Junior Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) added a stolen base to the effort.

Cevora opened the doubleheader with a double in game one, but would be stranded at second base.  The at bat would prove to be the only hit Notre Dame would achieve, but their pitching and defense came up big throughout the game, forcing a tied 0-0 score into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Unfortunately the hosts would score a run by knock three straight singles, allowing them to win the game 1-0.

The Gators saw more offensive success in the nightcap, recording four runs in the third inning.  Cevora started the inning with her second double of the day and advanced to third on a Bison error, as they mishandled a ball hit by freshman Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek).  Kastner then followed with a single, scoring Cevora and moving Taylor to third.  Junior Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) then reached first on another error by the Gallaudet defense, which scored Taylor and advance Kastner to third.  King came to the plate and knocked both Kastner and Winkelman home with a single to give Notre Dame their only runs of the doubleheader.

However, the four runs would not be enough as Gallaudet posted eight runs to open the second game, and added three more in the second inning.   The Bison added another run in the fifth to take the 12-4 victory.

The Gators will return to action on Monday as they host rival Trinity Washington University at Druid Hill Park.
