Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- The softball team for Notre Dame of Maryland University collected their second sweep of the season as they defeated Trinity Washington University 8-0 and 20-1.
Freshman
Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) paced the team with four hits and five runs batted in.
Senior
Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) knocked a double, a triple and also hit her first career home run while leading the team by scoring five runs on the day.
Junior
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.) and freshman
Samantha Kastner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) also added three hits. Taylor, Pedersen and Kastner also would score four runs each.
From the pitching circle, Cevora finished with a team-high 11 strikeouts. Freshman
Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) chipped in with nine.
In the opener, Notre Dame took advantage of six errors by the Tigers to score six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman
Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) began the inning with a triple and scored when freshman
Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras / Escuela Inter. Sampedrana) hit a ball that was mishandled by the first baseman. While Castillo tried to steal second, freshman
Brenda Diazdelvalle (College Park, Md./Rockville) scored. Taylor then singled to score Pedersen, and was followed by Cevora scoring on a fielder's choice hit by King. Junior
Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) hit into her own fielder's choice to score Taylor. Kastner finished the scoring by scoring when Gordon's second hit of the inning that was misplayed by the left fielder.
In the third inning, Pedersen scored on another Trinity Washington error that allowed Taylor to reach first base. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Taylor scored on a passed ball to make the score 8-0. Notre Dame would hold on to give King her first shutout victory of her career, winning the game 8-0.
The second game witnessed the Gators capitalizing on more errors by the Tigers' defense. Notre Dame answered a TWU run to open the game by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cevora started the rally with a single and advanced to home on a Taylor single after stealing second. Taylor then scored on a Kastner single. Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) to third base. An error by the shortstop on a ball hit by Ward allowed Winkelman to score and King to advance to third.
Gordon then knocked a sacrifice fly into the outfield that allowed King to cross the plate. Ward took advantage of another error to move to third base and scored on a passed ball. Castillo continued the hot start on Taylor's second single of the inning. Cevora, Taylor and Kastner would each score again to give Notre Dame the 10-0 early lead.
The Gators extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Castillo and Pedersen singled early in the inning and scored on a Taylor double.
The fourth inning saw Cevora open the inning with a triple. After sophomore
Emily Lamartina (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) walked, Kastner singled to score Cevora. Lamartina then scored the first run of her career on a fielder's choice hit by King. A passed ball allowed Kastner to cross the plate. Winkelman continued the inning by scoring on a ball hit by Diazdelvalle. Sophomore
Grace Park (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) followed by knocking in King while a Pedersen single knocked in Castillo.
With Pedersen on first, Cevora smashed the ball over the left field fence to collect her career's first home run and gave Notre Dame eight runs in the inning. The 20-1 lead would remain to give the Gators victory.
With the wins, the softball team improves to 4-4 on the season and opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play by hosting Cairn University on Friday. They will then visit CSAC rival Cedar Crest College on Saturday.
