Softball Drops Doubleheader With Keystone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md.  --  Notre Dame of Maryland University hosted Keystone College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday but fell to the Giants.

Notre Dame was led by senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) with four hits and tied with sophomore Bobbi McDowell (Shady Side, Md./Bishop McNamara) with two runs.  Freshman Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/Escuela International Sampedrana) chipped in with three hits and tied junior Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) with two runs batted in.

In the opener, the Gators captured an early 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Cevora opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on Castillo's single.  Winkelman singled to center field allowing both Cevora and Castillo to score.

The Giants answered with seven runs in the third inning.  Notre Dame tried to inch closer as they put up three runs in the third inning.  Winkelman tripled to start the inning and scored when freshman Samantha Kastner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) singled to right field.  Kastner then scored on a single by McDowell.  McDowell gave the Gators their third run of the inning when scored with a bases loaded walk by Cevora.

Keystone responded and put the game out of reach as they scored two runs in the fourth, and added five more in the fifth to take a 15-5 victory.

The nightcap started with both teams scoring one run in the first inning.  Cevora singled to open the Notre Dame inning and scored on a single by freshman Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside).

After the Giants posted three runs in the second, Notre Dame would respond with two runs of their own.  After McDowell and sophomore Jennifer Whiting (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) singled to reach base, Castillo doubled to score the pair and pull the Gators with 4-3.

Unfortunately, it would be the closest Notre Dame could get as the guests put seven runs on the board in the third inning, and two more in the fourth.  Notre Dame added one run in their fourth inning when freshman Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) crossed the plate.

The Giants added seven more runs in the fifth inning to capture a 20-4 victory.

Notre Dame will return to action Tuesday as they visit Rosemont College for another CSAC doubleheader.
