Box Score Gwynedd Valley, Pa. -- The lacrosse team for Notre Dame of Maryland University visited Gwynedd Mercy University for a Colonial States Athletic Conference clash.
Freshman
Megan Morales (Joppa, Md./Catholic) led the Gators with eight goals and 10 draw controls.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Walter (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) added three goals and an assist while freshman
Kirstin McGee (Middle River, Md./Catholic) chipped in with two goals and an assist. Sophomore
Bryanne Baskette (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) also scored a goal.
Junior
Brittany Smith (Parkville, Md./Howard Community College) paced the squad with three caused turnovers. She also tied McGee and Walter with a team-best two ground balls each. Junior goalkeeper
De'Ja Martin (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) notched seven saves.
The Gators jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with goals by Walter, Morales and McGee in the first 5:30 of the game. The Griffins then responded with a four goal rally over the next ten minutes to take a 4-3 advantage with 13:08 remaining in the first half.
Morales tied the score two minutes later on a free position shot..
After back-to-back goals by the hosts, Morales and Walter answered to notch another tie score, this time at 6-6 with 4:26 left in the opening frame. To end the half, Gwynedd Mercy ratlled off three more goals and took a 9-6 lead into the break.
Morales answered a GMU goal to open the second half, but was followed by two Griffin goals, forcing the Gators into a 12-7 deficit.
With 19:37 remaining, Morales scored another free position goal, and then scored back-to-back goals to respond to another Gwynedd Mercy goal, with 14:21 left in the game to make the score 13-10.
Another GMU goal was answered by Baskette and Morales to pull within 14-12 with just over 10 minutes still to play.
However, the hosts closed the game on a 6-2 run to take a 20-14 victory. Walter scored her third goal while McGee found the net on a free position shot to give the Notre Dame squad their 14 goals.
Notre Dame will return to action Saturday by visiting Neumann University for another CSAC matchup.
