Lacrosse Comes Up Short At Centenary

Box Score Hackettstown, N.J.  --  A late three-goal rally by Centenary College pushed the Cyclones past the Notre Dame of Maryland University's lacrosse team in tightly contested Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.

Freshman Megan Morales (Joppa, Md./Catholic) finished with seven goals and an assist to lead the Gators.  Freshman Kirstin McGee (Middle River, Md./Catholic) added three with sophomore Kaitlyn Walter (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) chipping in with two.  Junior Carrie Naylor (Elkridge, Md./Mount de Sales) and sophomore Khamaree Owens (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) both finished with one goal.

Morales paced the team with 13 draw controls and her four ground balls tied with senior Jessica Marx (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) for the team-high.

In goal, junior De'Ja Martin (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico) posted eight saves.

The hosts jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Morales tallied her first goal of the day.  She then answered another two-goal rally to make the score 4-2 12 minutes into the game.  Centenary responded by notching four straight goals before McGee stopped the Cyclone rally.

After another Centenary goal pushed their lead to 9-3, Notre Dame replied by finishing the first half with their own four-goal run.  Morales started the rally with her third goal then assisted on Walter's first goal of the day.  The duo switched roles two minutes later and Walter would assist Morales' fourth goal.  Walter then closed out the half with her second goal.

Opening the second frame, McGee helped pull the Gators within 9-8 by scoring just 1:30 into the half.  Another Cyclone goal gave Centenary a two goal lead, but Notre Dame answered with goals by Morales and McGee to tie the game at 10-10 with just under 24 minutes left to play.

Over the next four minutes the teams exchanged goals to notch another tied score, 11-11, with 19:42.  Another two-goal run by the Cyclones gave the hosts a 13-11 advantage with 16:56 remaining in the game.

A minute and a half later, Owens pulled the Gators with 13-12 by scoring her only goal of the afternoon, which Morales followed with a free position shot and goal to tied the score again at 13-13 with 14:46 left.  Eight minutes then ran off the clock when Naylor gave Notre Dame their first lead of the game at 14-13 when she scored off a pass from Walter with 6:43 on the clock.

However, the hosts would not be held down, as Centenary rattled off three straight goals over the next 1:30 to give the Cyclones a 16-14 victory.

The Gators will look to rebound on Wednesday by hosting Immaculata University on Alumnae Field.   .
