Gators Split CSAC Twinbill at Cedar Crest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Allentown, Md.  --  Notre Dame of Maryland University's softball team split their Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cedar Crest College after scoring two runs in their seventh inning in game two.  The Gators fell in the opener 3-1, and captured game two 4-3.

For the two games, junior Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) notched four hits, a run and one run batted in, while senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) belted her second straight home run, and finished with three hits and two runs scored.  Freshman Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) chipped in with three hits as well.  Freshman Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras / Escuela International Sampedrana) added two hits in the nightcap.

In the first game, Cevora opened the game by belting a home run, her second career home run, and also marks back to back home runs, as she smashed her first career homer in her last at bat in the Gators last game.  Unfortunately it would be the only run for Notre Dame in the game, as the Falcons would capture the opener 3-1.

In the nightcap, CCC took a 1-0 lead by scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  Castillo would help tie the game by hitting a double in the second inning to score junior Morgan Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech.).

The hosts collected a lead by scoring a run in the third and fourth inning, taking another 3-1 advantage.  Notre Dame pulled closer, as freshman Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) doubled to score Cevora, narrowing the game to 3-2 in the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Winkelman knocked her first career home run to open the inning and tie the score.  Ward then reached on a fielder's choice to give Notre Dame the go-ahead runner on first base.  After stealing second, Ward gave the Gators the lead as she scored on a double by freshman Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale).

King then forced three straight outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Notre Dame the 4-3 victory.

With the split, the Gators move to 5-5 on the season, and open CSAC play 1-1.  They return to action tomorrow as they host Cairn University at Druid Hill Park at 2 p.m.
