Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University took an early lead but it would not be enough as the Gators fell to Gwynedd Mercy University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Freshman Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) led the squad with four hits, including one double. She also scored three runs on the day. Senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) added three hits.
The Gators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the opener. Junior Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.) belted a double which allowed freshman Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/Escuela International Sampedrana) to score. Cevora then followed with a single to score Pedersen.
Unfortunately, the Griffins responded with four runs in the fourth inning and posted two more in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Taylor opened the inning with a single up the middle and used a passed ball to advance to second base. Junior Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) advanced Taylor to third. Freshman Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) knocked her with a double to centerfield. It would be all Notre Dame would respond with however, as Gwynedd Mercy captured the opener with a 6-3 victory.
In the nightcap, the Griffins would score three runs in the first inning and added another run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning, the guests crossed seven runners across the plate. Notre Dame would attempt a rally in their fourth inning. Taylor opened with a single to right field and scored on an error by the Griffin first baseman. King would score a second Notre Dame run on a single by freshman Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale).
They then added a third run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Winkelman singled to score Taylor. However, the three runs would be it for the Notre Dame offense as the Gators fell 14-3.
Notre Dame will look to rebound Sunday as they host Marywood University at 2 p.m.
