Softball Sweeps Cairn

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland softball team secured their first conference victories of the season Sunday afternoon over Cairn University.  The Gators were originally scheduled to travel to Cairn Friday, but the doubleheader was moved to Baltimore Sunday after inclement weather moved through the area Friday into Saturday.  

The Gators' first victory of the season took 11 innings.  Notre Dame went into the sixth inning holding an 8-4 lead, but the Highlanders would tally four runs to see the game tied.  In the seventh inning, both teams failed to record a run, sending the game into extra innings.  In the top of the ninth inning, Cairn posted four runs, but Notre Dame answered, stinging together four run before closing out the frame.  In the top of the 10th inning, again Cairn tallied a run to take the lead, but Notre Dame answered with one run.  After Cairn scored one run in the top of the 11th, Notre Dame this time would answer with two runs.  Freshman Syndey Salgado singled in her at bat to score sophomore Sammy Kastner for the win, 14-13.  In their second game of their doubleheader, Notre Dame would jump out to a four run lead in the bottom of the first.  The Highlanders would chip away at the Gator lead and in the top of the sixth would tie the game at seven apiece.  Notre Dame would chip in two runs in the bottom of the inning to help seal the Notre Dame victory, 9-7. 

Freshman Hanna Morseman led the Gators at the plate with six hits, three RBIs, and two doubles for a .600 batting average.  Pitching for the Gators, Morseman was the winning pitcher in both games, recording five strikeouts over eight innings for a 1.75 ERA.  Freshman Isa Carunungan hit .500 through both games with five hits, three RBIs, and three extra base hits including a triple.  She had five put outs in the outfield, while Kastner lead the team in assists with seven.  Pitcher Maddie King had nine strikeouts over the first 10 innings of their first game.  As a team over the two games, the Gators recorded 23 runs, 33 hits, six doubles, and two triples.

Notre Dame's game scheduled against Cedar Crest Saturday was postponed and could possibly be rescheduled before they are scheduled to be on the road Friday at Gwynedd Mercy.  Check back for any updates.
