Lacrosse Wins in Thriller on Senior Day

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – In a game that saw three ties and three lead changes, Notre Dame lacrosse came out on top over Gwynedd Mercy University, Saturday afternoon.  Five Gators recorded goals in a game that came down to the last shot.  Prior to the start of the game, seniors Stephanie Roche, Brittany Smith, Briana Johnson, and De'Ja Martin were honored.

To open the game, the Griffin would be the first to get on the board to take a one-goal lead with two minutes off the clock.  In the Gators next possession, sophomore Kirstin McGee notched the first goal for Notre Dame off a free position shot.

Junior Kaitlyn Walter's goal with 25 minutes left in the first half gave Notre Dame their first lead of the game.  After giving up one goal to start the game, the Gators went on a five-goal run to go up, 5-1 with 14 minutes left in the half.

To close out the half, Notre Dame and Gwynedd Mercy went goal-for-goal.  With less than 30 seconds left in the half, the Griffins used a late goal to cut the Notre Dame lead to three going into halftime, 8-5.

To open the half, Notre Dame controlled the ball on offense firing off three shots, two of which were on goal.  After holding the Gators, the Griffins posted their sixth goal of the game on the opposite end of the field, now with into two, 8-6.  On their next possession, Gwynedd Mercy scored off a free position shot, score now 8-7.

With 20 minutes left, Notre Dame posted back-to-back free position goals by sophomore Megan Morales and freshman Jessica Wells, to regain a three goal lead, 10-7.

Notre Dame and Gwynedd Mercy traded goals over the next two minutes of play.

With 17 minutes left in the game, the Griffins posted their ninth goal of the game, starting a six goal run to take the lead.  The Gators were faced with a three-goal deficit with just 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Morales started the Notre Dame comeback, posting her 51st goal of the season to get the Gators back within two goals, 12-14.  With time running down, freshman Summer Corey used a free position shot to get the Gators with in one goal.

Off the next draw, Notre Dame regained possession.  A minute later, Morales would find the back of the goal to tie the game for the third time.

Gwynedd Mercy fired off a shot with 1:44 left in the game, but goalie De'Ja Martin posted the save.  After a successful clear by Notre Dame, Walter recorded the game winning goal, fed from Morales, with 38 seconds left in the game.

The Griffins immediately called a time out.  Gwynedd Mercy took possession off the draw control and charged the goal.  As time expired, the Griffins fired off the potential game tying shot, but again Martin came up big, helping secure the 15-14 Gator victory.

Morales led the team with seven goals.  Walter finished the game with four, followed by McGee with two.  Wells and Corey both had a goal in the game.

Notre Dame finished their regular conference season 5-4 overall and have now secured a playoff berth.  The Gators' ranking is yet to be determined.  The outcome of the Immaculata vs. Keystone game today will set the seeding for the playoffs.

On Tuesday, Notre Dame will host local rival, Goucher College for a non-conference matchup.
