Box Score 2 BEL AIR, Md. – The 2017 Notre Dame softball season came to a close this afternoon after the Gators fell in their Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Clarks Summit University, 10-2 and 10-1.
In game one, the Gators gave up two runs in first inning. In sophomore
Sammy Kastner's first at bat, she posted her first hit of the day. Senior
Margaret Pedersen notched a double to move Kastner to third. With one out, freshman
Hanna Moresman posted a single to score Kastner and move Pedersen to third. Sophomore
Maddie King grounded out to score Pedersen to tie the game at two apiece. Notre Dame posted five hits in the game, but would drop game one in five innings, 10-2.
In game two, Notre Dame again struggled to score, but held the Defenders to three runs over three innings. In the bottom of the fourth the Gators would get on the board. First at bat of the Gators, Pedersen reached first after being hit by a pitch. The following two batters, Morseman and senior
Morgan Ward, both reached on errors by Clarks Summit. Pedersen capitalized on the errors and advanced to home to score Notre Dame's only run of the game. The Gators would give up seven runs to close out the final three frames, falling 10-1.
Morseman and Kastner led the team at the plate posting two hits each, with Morseman tallying an RBI and a double. Pitching for the Gators King recorded five strikeouts and Morseman finished with three.
In between the games today, Notre Dame celebrate their three graduating seniors: Margaret Pederson, Morgan Ward, and
Wendi Winkelman.
In her four years on the team, Margaret Pedersen has made 112 appearances for the Gators. She has recorded 48 hits, 42 runs, 20 RBIs, six doubles, and three triples for over 60 total bases. In the field, Margaret has recorded nearly 100 putouts and has 24 assists. At Notre Dame, Margaret was a three-sport athlete playing for the volleyball, softball, and swim teams. This school year Margaret was the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President. She was also named to the CSAC All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship Teams and won the Mary Laverty Funke Award for Spirit, Dedication, and Scholarship last year. She will graduate with a degree in Mathematics.
In her four seasons competing for the Gators, Morgan Ward has made 83 appearances. At the plate she has tallied 33 runs, 29 hits, 18 RBIs, and four doubles. Spending most of her time at second base for the Gators, Morgan has posted over 125 putouts and 87 assists. She a student worker for the Notre Dame basketball team as the official scorekeeper. Morgan will graduate from Notre Dame with a degree in Liberal Arts.
A four-year senior for the Gators, Wendi Winkelman has made 96 appearances for Notre Dame. In her 242 plate appearances she has recorded 66 hits, 49 RBIs, 39 runs, 11 doubles, three triples, and one homerun for 86 total bases. In the infield, she has posted 96 putouts and 99 assists. At Notre Dame, Wendi was also a member of the Notre Dame swim team and the Student Government Association. Wendi will graduate from Notre Dame with a degree in Biology.
The Gators finish the season 5-24-1 overall and 4-18 in conference play. Notre Dame posted one more conference win over last season. This season the Gators posted a higher batting average then last season. The saw improvements over last season, posting 34 more putouts, 33 more assists, 27 more hits, and 11 more doubles. This season Notre Dame posted two extra inning win and two walk-off victories.
Notre Dame is graduating three seniors and returning 11 underclassmen next season.
