Box Score SPARKS, Md. – The Notre Dame of Maryland lacrosse team outlasted Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Centenary University, to pick up their third conference win of the season at Tierney Field at the U.S. Lacrosse National Training Center.
Sophomore
Megan Morales led the charge for the Gators, netting eight goals and 12 draw controls. Junior
Kaitlyn Walter netted five goals for Notre Dame, adding two assists. Sophomore
Kirstin McGee added a season-high five assists in the game, while also scoring two goals. The Gators had eight players post points in the win (Morales (8), Walter (5),
Summer Corey (3), McGee (2),
Khamaree Owens (2),
Brittany Smith (1),
Katie Salim (1), and
Steph Roche (1)).
The Cyclones struck first in the game, netting their first goal with just under eight minutes into the first half. Walter recorded the Gators' first goal of the game, helping spark the Notre Dame 8-0 run over a 10-minute period.
Centenary's Abby Voelkner, who scored seven goals for the Cyclones, snapped the Notre Dame run, finding the goal with 10:25 left in the half. To close out the half, both teams registered five more goals apiece. Notre Dame held a 13-7 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Cyclones refused to back down, outscoring the Gators 13-10. Notre Dame started off with an early goal in the half by Roche. Her goal was followed up by back-to-back goals by Walter and Morales to give the Gators their largest lead of the game at nine.
With 23 minutes left in the game, Centenary started to chip away at Notre Dame's lead. Both team traded goals, but in the last six minutes of play, the Cyclones outscored the Gators 6-1, getting within three. Time expired before Centenary could get any closer.
The Gators saw several team season highs in the game, totaling 31 points off a season high 23 goals and eight assists.
The lacrosse team is back in action Tuesday, as they travel to Immaculata University for a 7:00 p.m. game under the lights.
