Leatherwood Named United East Player and Pitcher of the Year

Latham, N.Y.– The United East announced its 2024 Softball Skye Division All-Conference Major Award Winners and All-Conference Teams on Tuesday, May 14 with NDMU being represented in a major way. Jessie Leatherwood was named United East Pitcher and Player of the Year after her phenomenal season. Leatherwood was named to the All-Conference First Team as a pitcher along with Julianna Leatherwood who made the cut as a utility player. Charlene Torres was named to the Second Team as a catcher and Malorie Gogel was selected to the third team as a pitcher.  

Je. Leatherwood ended her career with an exclamation point, being named United East Pitcher and Player of the year. As a hitter, she was outstanding hitting .433 with 42 hits including 16 extra base hits. Je. Leatherwood drove in 23 RBIs on the year. This season, Je. Leatherwood became the all-time leader in hits, currently she is sitting at 134 hits. Inside the circle, Je. Leatherwood was equally as impressive. She finished the season with a record of 9-4, posting an ERA of 2.86 and a WHIP of 1.28. She pitched 88.0 innings, recording 109 strikeouts this spring. Je. Leatherwood is the program's record holder in wins, ERA and strikeouts.  

Ju. Leatherwood proved to be the definition of a utility player, making starts for the Gators at pitcher, second base, shortstop, third base and in the outfield. While playing multiple positions, she was excellent in the batters' box, hitting .352 recording 43 hits. Leatherwood drove in 22 RBIs on the season. Leatherwood made a couple of appearances in the circle, going 2-1 earning victories over Keystone College and Clarks Summit.  

Torres was one of the best hitters in the conference, finishing the season with a .379 batting average, smacking 44 hits including nine doubles and two home runs. She plated 29 RBIs, 10th most in the conference.  

Gogel earned her place on the All-Conference team, stepping up to be one of the best pitchers in the conference. She finished the season with an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.73. Gogel earned six victories including the program's first-ever win over Wilson College.
