Gator Win Five-Set Battle with Lions

BALTIMORE– The Notre Dame of Maryland's Women's Volleyball Team held off a late push from Penn St. Mont Alto, earning a five-set victory on Thursday, Sept. 7.  

The Gators got off to a fast start, taking an 11-6 lead in the opening set off a kill from Emily Gordon. NDMU went on a 6-0 run, powered by a pair of service aces from Izzy Stewart to hold a 21-16 advantage. Penn St. Mont Alto rallied to tie the set at 24 forcing a win-by-two situation. After a Lions hitting error, Miasia Ferrer slammed down an overpass, giving NDMU a 26-24 win in the opening set.  

NDMU continued their momentum throughout the second set, taking a 9-4 lead after a solo block by Ciarra Bockstie. The Lions continued to battle, tying the set at 18. Gwen Abnett and Gordon smashed down back-to-back kills to retake the lead. NDMU remained in control with Ferrer and Bockstie delivering kills to clinch the second set.  

Penn St. Mont Alto made several adjustments and used their block to frustrate NDMU's hitters. The Lions captured the third and fourth sets, forcing a deciding fifth set. The Gators took a 5-2 lead, with Elora Taala tipping a kill over the Lions block. Penn St. Mont Alto tied the set a five before NDMU rattled off five of the next six points. Emma Mueller and Ferrer pushed the Gators closer to a victory with back-to-back kills. Taala blasted her second kill of the set to pull NDMU within one point of the victory. Mueller fired one last service ace, securing the 3-2 victory.  

The Gators offense was led by Ferrer who finished the game with 15 kills and Gordon added 10 more kills. Bockstie and Abnett each finished with nine kills. Mueller finished the match with 22 assists while Natalie Newton added 18 assists. Defensively, Paulina Hernandez led the way with 21 digs and Jade Stewart added 16 digs.  
 
WHO'S NEXT? 
The Gators will return home to face Susquehanna University in a doubleheader on Saturday, Sept. 7. The first serve is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
