Gators Earn First Victory of the Season at Hood

FREDERICK, MD - Paced by eight first-place finishes, College of Notre Dame swimming earned its first dual meet victory of the 2009-2010 season with a 112-90 win at Hood Saturday afternoon.

Notre Dame got on board quickly with four straight wins to start the meet. The team of Shannon Berry, Faith Jones, Melanie Moscoso-Meiller and Jean Taylor took the 200 yard medley relay in 2:23.11. Junior Sarah McCloud went on to earn a first place win in the 1000 yard freestyle in 12:44.40, while Moscoso-Meiller followed with a win in the 200 yard freestyle in 2:16.37 Berry took first in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:11.79, more than ten seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

Jones and junior Ashley Fleming were 1-2 finishers in the 50 yard freestyle in times of 27.21 and 31.36 seconds, respectively. Moscoso-Meiller won her second event of the day in the 100 yard freestyle in 1:01.91 with Berry also taking her second individual victory of the day in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:31.18. Fleming rounded out Notre Dame's first place finishes on the day in the 500 yard freestyle, completing the race in 6:36.81.

The win for Notre Dame is the first prior to the new year break since the 2006-07 season, and it is also the Gators first win against Hood since November 18, 2006 when Notre Dame won by a narrow 63-59 decision.

The Gators will next compete in their first home meet of the year on Wednesday, December 2 at 6 p.m. against local rival Goucher College.
