BALTIMORE - College of Notre Dame continued its inaugural softball season this past Friday and Saturday with doubleheaders at Colonial States Athletic Conference opponents Neumann and Philadelphia Biblical. The Gators dropped two games to Neumann, 10-0 and 14-0. On Saturday Notre Dame traveled to Philadelphia Biblical and fell 12-0 in game one before scoring its first runs in program history in a 13-2 loss in game two.
Angela Sebasto held the Gators to just two hits while striking out eight in four innings of work to earn her fourth victory of the season for the Knights (11-7 overall, 6-0 CSAC) in game one. Sarah McGann followed Sebasto's performance with a five inning, complete game one-hitter in Neumann's 14-0 game two victory. McGann allowed just one hit while striking out eight Gators.
Notre Dame senior Katryn Ellis (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) went 2-for-2 in game one at the plate for the Gators while freshman catcher Katie Murphy (Baltimore/Baltimore Polytechnic) was the only Gator to reach base against McGann, going 1-for-1 at the dish with a walk.
Betsy Ranck led Philadelphia Biblical (3-5 overall, 2-0 CSAC) to a 12-0 five-inning win over Notre Dame in game one on Saturday. Ranck allowed just one hit while striking out six Gators. Junior Whitley Noel (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion Area) notched the only hit for Notre Dame.
The Gators scored their first run in program history in the top of the second inning of game two. Sophomore Erika Brooks (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) led off the inning with a single and proceeded to steal second with one out. Murphy ended up reaching base on an error by the Crimson Eagles centerfielder, leading the the Gators first run. Notre Dame would score its second run of the game in the top of the fifth. Murphy lined Notre Dame's first-ever extra base hit, a double. Murphy would eventually score on another Philadelphia Biblical error.
The Gators (0-6 overall, 0-6 CSAC) will play in their first-ever non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. start at crosstown rival Stevenson.
